7 good actions to take care of your scarves

Scarves are essential fashion accessories that add a touch of color and style to any outfit. Whether they are wool, cotton or silk, they require certain care and precautions to remain in good condition and not to be damaged prematurely. Remember to untie your scarves carefully and store them flat to undo the folds, your scarves are made from precious and delicate fabrics. Discover our 7 tips for maintaining your scarves and allowing them to keep their colors and their outfit for as long as possible.

1. Read the care label

The first tip for caring for your scarves may seem quite simple, but it is of capital importance, because it is often neglected. Please read the care label carefully before washing your scarf for the first time. This is because the label may contain important information about the materials and recommended washing instructions. Some fibers, like silk, require special care, while others can be machine washed.

But very often, we cut the label from our scarf because it is not aesthetically pleasing. In this case, remember to keep it carefully, it will be of great use to you when washing your scarf and will certainly avoid unpleasant surprises.

2. Wash your scarves by hand

What we generally like about our scarves are their colors and their softness. To ensure that they are preserved for as long as possible, it is best to choose a gentle washing method, such as hand washing. By washing them in cold water, you will limit color bleeding, which can still occur, depending on the material your scarves are made of.

By opting for hand washing, you will not only preserve the colors of your scarves, but also their outfit. Scarves are often made from delicate materials such as silk, wool or cashmere. Machine washing these fabrics can damage or distort them.

If, however, you decide to machine wash your scarves, be sure to do so in cold water and on a delicate cycle to avoid damaging their fibers.

3. Use mild detergents

Third good thing to do to care for your scarves: use mild detergents. Products that are too aggressive could damage the fibers of your precious scarves and cause them to lose their shine. There are commercially available mild detergents designed for delicate fabrics, silk and wool, such as Marseille or Castile soap. You can even use baby shampoo. But above all, do not add fabric softener, it could weigh down the fibers of your scarves.

4. Hand spin without twisting

As our scarves are often made from delicate fabrics such as cashmere, wool and cotton voile, tumble drying should be avoided at all costs. High heat can actually damage them by causing shrinkage, warping or loss of softness of the fabric. As for excessive friction caused by the dryer, it risks causing the formation of lint or pilling, and damaging the product.

Likewise, you should avoid twisting or wringing your scarves to remove excess water; gentle wringing will be sufficient without risking damaging your scarf. It is best to dry them freely flat in the shade to preserve their colors.

5. The sun, the enemy of your scarves

We don't always think about it, but it is recommended to avoid letting your scarves dry in the sun. UV rays can actually alter fabric fibers, which can make them more fragile and more likely to tear or warp. Another disadvantage: prolonged exposure to the sun can discolor your scarves and make them dull.

It is therefore best to let your scarves dry indoors, away from direct sunlight. If you must dry them outside, choose a shady spot or use a covered drying rack. You can also dry them rolled in a towel, or dry flat, very important so as not to deform your scarf.

6. Iron with care

Once your scarf has been washed and dried, it’s time to iron it. An essential step to give it a perfect finish, it nonetheless remains delicate. Here again, you should refer to the instructions on the label. Set your iron to the recommended temperature and avoid ironing directly on the edges so as not to distort them. For added precaution, place a cotton cloth between the scarf and the iron, this will protect the fibers from heat attack.

You can also use a steam iron which can be used as an iron.

7. Store them properly

Mission accomplished ! You have followed all the right steps to maintain your scarves. They are clean again and ready to find their place in your closet. But this final storage step should not be neglected. Because after all the precautions you have just taken, it would be a shame to damage your scarves by crumpling them. To avoid this, you can fold them neatly and store them in a drawer or hang them on a hanger. Once sheltered, they will just wait for your next outing to give an original and colorful twist to your look.

The care of your scarves, even the most fragile, now has no secrets for you. What if you expanded your collection with original and elegant models? Discover our collection of large wool scarves and cotton voile scarves .
